Running the toughest footrace on earth for Spinal Research

About Spinal Research

Every year more than 800 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord. Spinal Research
is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop reliable treatments for paralysis caused by a broken back or neck. Thanks to such pioneering research, paralysis can now be treated and we stand on the brink of applying therapies that will restore movement and feeling and transform the lives of paralysed people.

Repairing a damaged spinal cord is one of the most complex challenges that medical science has ever faced. The neurons forming the spinal cord are highly vulnerable to damage and unlike other nerve fibres they do not have a natural ability to re-grow.

However major breakthroughs are being made and Spinal Research has played a fundamental role in developing experimental treatments such as ‘The Routes of the Four Centimetre Future’. This aims to regenerate four centimetres of spinal cord, potentially helping a seriously paralysed person breathe unaided, or regain the use of their arms.

The psychological impact of spending the rest of one’s life in a wheelchair and reliant on others can have an overwhelming effect on the paralysed person and their family.

It is now vital to move as quickly as possible to test these potential treatments in human patients. To launch and run clinical trials, Spinal Research needs to raise at least £2 million a year over the next five years. Your generous sponsorship of George Eyles will go directly to this project, making you part of a life changing experience for thousands of paralysed people around the world.
